Iain McKnight

Iain grew up in Cornwall and began his musical career, aged eleven, as a cornet player at St Austell Band. After a year, he settled on the tuba and, at the age of fourteen, was invited to become a member of the organisation’s senior band.

In April 2005, Iain joined the Leyland Band. After a ten-year spell at Leyland, he took a break from playing before joining Foden’s in 2017. Iain has held positions as musical director at Lostock Hall and Flixton Bands as well as being engaged as a guest musical director by numerous bands including Hebden Bridge and St Austell and is the musical director of the Stockport Schools’ Senior Band.

Iain moved to the North West in 2003 to study at the University of Salford, graduating in 2006 with a first class honours degree in Music. During his time at Salford he received awards for conducting, composition and academic achievement. Postgraduate study followed at both Salford (MA Compositional Studies with distinction) and Manchester Metropolitan University (PGCE Secondary Music) before, in 2008, he started his career in music education.
